The oil used in diesel engines serves the same purpose as the oil used in gas engines. Specifically, it keeps the moving parts of the engine lubricated to prevent damage. Much like oil for gas engines, it will also need to be replaced regularly as it begins to break down, so that the engine stays protected. But there are some key differences in the makeup of the oil itself, and using oil meant for gas engines in your diesel-powered VW can lead to trouble. For one thing, diesel oil tends to be higher in viscosity than the oil used in gas engines. In addition, the oil used for diesel engines has a higher amount of detergent additives, including additives that aren’t found in oil for gas engines. If you were to put diesel oil in a gas engine, these additives would cause damage. Similarly, if you were to put synthetic oil for a gas engine in a diesel-powered VW, the engine wouldn’t get the level of cleaning it requires.
At Byers Volkswagen, we use synthetic diesel oil. When you have diesel oil changes performed here, you’ll only have to have the oil changed every 10,000 miles or once a year–whichever comes first. When we change the diesel oil in your VW, we’ll also replace the old oil filter with a new OEM oil filter.
